Hi, I’m Iris Running Thunder (they/them). I am an All-Spirit, Assiniboine, and Turtle Mountain Chippewa illustrator and surface designer in Lawrence, Kansas. My work is rooted in channeling human emotions through cute characters and shape-based illustrations. I love drawing playful characters and using color to evoke warmth, comfort, and a touch of cuteness. My art is often simple and sweet, but it’s grounded in real feelings and the hope of brightening someone’s day.
In 2021, I began selling stickers and small prints. It was a slow, tender beginning, shaped by life-altering injuries that continue to affect my daily life. Balancing health, dreams, and the realities of life has been a challenge, but also a powerful teacher. I know that many people are carrying something, and I hope my art can be a little spark of light for those who need it.
Over time, my business has grown and evolved. I'm currently expanding into surface design, with collections in development for baby and pet products, stationery, and eventually children’s books. I’m actively seeking collaborations with brands, clients, and communities who value joy, inclusivity, and softness in the world.
When I’m not drawing, I’m at the gym working on strength and mobility, spending time with my partner, our two adorable dogs, and our beloved Midwest Pusheen, or enjoying a cozy day with whole food snacks and dreamy synth sounds. The road hasn’t always been steady, but creating cute things continues to lift my spirit and keep me connected to joy. May we all find those little moments that brighten our days :)
My work can be found in independent shops and bookstores, both locally and out of state.
I’ve also had the opportunity to collaborate on design and illustration projects with local businesses, universities, and the City of Lawrence. These partnerships have allowed me to bring playful, thoughtful art into public spaces and community-focused projects. I love creating work that connects with people both on a personal and community level.
